Lawlab Water Law Award
15 February 2011
As a leader in water resources law, lawlab seeks to inspire law graduates and legal practitioners to choose the water sector for their future career.
Lawlab is a boutique law firm with a unique role in water reform, providing advice and conveyancing services to governments, industry and individuals. Recognising the skills shortages challenging the water industry, we seek to enhance the expertise of law graduates and legal practitioners in this sector through the annual Lawlab Water Law Award.
The 2010 Water Law Award asked law graduates and legal practitioners to submit a paper on: An emerging issue in Australia Water Trading Law. The winner was presented their award and prize money, and given the opportunity to present their paper at the Water Leaders Congress in February 2010.
The topic for the 2011 Water Law Award will be announced in April 2011 and the submission deadline will be in late June.

2010 Water Law Award winner: Alex Readford
Prior to winning the Water Law Award in early 2010, Alex had completed his Bachelor of Law (Honours) at the Australian National University. He was continuing his study with an Honours Thesis in Science while employed with the Bureau of Regional Sciences.
Upon being presented his award, Alex said “the prospect of networking with, and presenting to, a high profile audience at this stage of my career is exciting. The cash prize is a great recognition of the effort graduates put into their studies, and I’d encourage others with an interest in the water sector to enter next year’s award”.
Alex’s winning paper ‘Can the rivers run wild?’ discussed the legislative avenues available to the Commonwealth to acquire water entitlements for environmental flows in the Murray-Darling Basin, and the implications for water resource management.
